1 John 2:20 Meaning: The Anointing That Gives You Knowledge

The Greek word for chrisma (anointing) appears only here and in verse 27. It means the ointment or oil used for anointing, but John is picturing the reality behind the symbol: the Holy Spirit poured out on believers. This is the same Spirit that anointed Jesus at his baptism, now given to every Christian.

The verb oidate (you know) is deeper than gathering facts. It means intimate, experiential knowledge, the kind that comes from sharing life with someone. And the word hagios (Holy One) points to Christ, the sinless one from whom this anointing flows.

So the anointing is not a magic oil or a one-time event. It is the ongoing presence of the Spirit, teaching you from the inside, making the truth feel like truth.

Christians across traditions agree that the anointing refers to the Holy Spirit and his work, but they emphasize different aspects.

Many Protestant commentators, including Calvin and Wesley, see the anointing as the inward teaching of the Spirit that gives believers certain knowledge of the gospel. This protects them from being swept away by every false teacher.

In Catholic and Orthodox teaching, the anointing is tied to the sacrament of confirmation or chrismation, where the believer is sealed with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit's gifts enable the faithful to discern true doctrine.

All traditions share the conviction that this anointing is not earned but received as a gift from Christ, and it equips ordinary believers to stand firm in the truth.

Some read the phrase "you all have knowledge" and think John is claiming that Christians know everything, that they have instant answers to every question about science, history, or theology.

In fact, the Greek literally says "you all know" (pantes), not "you know all things" (panta). John is not promising omniscience. He is promising that every believer, not just the elite or educated, has been given the Spirit's teaching to recognize the core truth about Jesus and resist deception.

You don't need a theology degree to spot a lie. The same Spirit who anointed the apostles lives in you.

This week, before you accept a new teaching or a trendy idea about faith, pause. Ask the Spirit who lives in you: Is this consistent with who Jesus is? Pay attention to the quiet unease that rises when something doesn't match what you already know of Christ. That unease may be the chrisma doing its work.

And when you feel unsure, remember: the anointing doesn't give you every answer at once. It gives you enough. Enough to hold onto Jesus. Enough to let go of what isn't true.
