1 John 2:18 Meaning: What Is the 'Last Hour'?

Two words carry the weight of this verse. The first is last hour (eschatē hōra). In John's Gospel, an hour is often a critical moment, Jesus' hour to be glorified, the hour when the dead hear His voice. But here it is the final decisive period of all history. The word antichrist (antichristos) has a prefix anti that can mean both against and instead of. So an antichrist is someone who opposes Christ by trying to take His place. For the antichrist, some identify a coming individual (the man of lawlessness in 2 Thessalonians), while others, like Calvin, see a spirit of opposition that appears repeatedly in false teachers. Each reading takes seriously the urgency John conveys, even as he does not set a date.

Some readers think John predicted the world would end within a few years of his writing, and when it did not, they assume he was mistaken. In fact, 'last hour' in the New Testament refers to the period between Christ's first coming and his final return, an era that may last centuries. John is not giving a deadline; he is calling attention to the decisive time in which we already live. The appearing of many antichrists confirms we are in that final era, not that its length is short.

This week, pay attention to subtle voices that try to replace Jesus with something else, a more acceptable teacher, a more comfortable gospel, a spirituality without the cross. The test John gives is simple: do they deny that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God come in the flesh? You may not hear that denial in so many words, but it shows up whenever someone claims you can know God without knowing Christ.
