Proverbs 8:23 Meaning: The Meaning of 'Set Up from Everlasting'

The Hebrew word behind “set up” is nissakhti, and it has been debated for centuries. It comes from a root that means to pour out, like pouring oil on a king’s head or pouring molten metal into a mold. That is why some translators read it as “I was anointed”, the way a king is installed. Others hear the sense of being appointed or established, like a cornerstone set firmly in place. Either way, the word suggests that wisdom was given a role, not brought into existence. The word for “everlasting” is olam, which points to a past so far back it has no boundary. It is the same word used for God’s own eternal nature. Together, these two words make a claim: wisdom has no starting point. It was already there before time began, chosen and prepared for the work of creation.

Christians across traditions have read this verse very differently. Many Protestant commentators like Matthew Henry and John Gill see wisdom here as a divine person, the Son of God, who was appointed as mediator before the world existed. They point to the translation “anointed” and connect it to Psalm 2:6. Other scholars, as in the Cambridge Bible, prefer “set up” or “established,” and caution against reading the full doctrine of the Trinity into this poetic passage. The Lange commentary agrees, saying the language is poetic and not meant to build exact doctrine. Some early sources, like the Septuagint, render it “he founded me,” which opens the door to seeing wisdom as a created being. Each tradition takes the same words and draws different conclusions, all trying to honor what Scripture says about wisdom’s place before creation.

A common misreading is to assume that “set up” means wisdom was created at a specific moment, like a new invention. In fact, the Hebrew word can mean “anointed” or “installed,” not “made.” The phrase “from everlasting” pushes the origin back before time itself. The verse is not about wisdom being brought into being, but about wisdom being given a permanent place and purpose before the earth existed.

If wisdom has been around since before the first grain of dust, then it is not a new idea God thought up last week.
