Proverbs 31:10 Meaning: The True Value of a Worthy Woman

Three words carry the weight of this verse. The first is chayil, translated here as “worthy” or “virtuous.” It means strength, ability, and moral courage. This is not a passive or merely gentle goodness. It is the same word used of Ruth, of whom the whole city knew she was a worthy woman (Ruth 3:11). A woman of chayil is capable and active, full of spiritual and practical strength.

The second word is peninim, usually rendered “rubies” or “pearls.” The exact gem is uncertain, but the point is clear: her worth cannot be measured by any precious stone. She is beyond price. The third key word is the verb matsa, “to find.” It suggests seeking and finding, and elsewhere in Proverbs it is used of discovering a wife as a gift from the Lord (Proverbs 18:22). So the verse hints at divine provision. A woman of such character is rare, but not impossible, she is a grace from God.

Christians have read this verse in two main ways. Many see it as a literal portrait of an ideal wife, a real woman whose character is rare and valuable, meant to inspire women (and men) to pursue godliness in everyday life. Matthew Henry, for example, treats it as a description of a virtuous woman, showing her practical wisdom and devotion.

Others read it as an allegory, seeing wisdom personified as this capable woman, or the Church as Christ’s bride. John Gill noted that the description is so lofty it cannot fully match any fallen human, so some interpreters look for a deeper spiritual meaning. Both approaches honor the text. What unites them is the conviction that the character described here reflects the fear of the Lord, which is the foundation of all true worth.

Some read this verse as setting an impossible standard that leaves women feeling they cannot measure up. In fact, the poem that follows is a celebration of character, not a strict checklist. The entire section ends with a simpler foundation: “a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised” (Proverbs 31:30). The point is not perfection but a heart that trusts God and serves others. The woman in Proverbs 31 is a person of faith and action, not a flawless ideal.

This verse asks something of every reader. If you are a woman, you do not need to try to become every detail of this poem overnight.
