Luke 3:23 Meaning: Jesus Begins at Thirty, 'Supposed' Son

Three Greek words give this verse its texture. ἀρχόμενος (archomenos) is a participle meaning “when he began.” The King James translation “began to be about thirty” misses the force: Luke is saying Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his ministry, not that he suddenly turned thirty. This shows intentional timing, Jesus prepared for decades before stepping forward. ὡσεί (hōsei) means “about” or “approximately.” Luke does not pin down an exact age. God’s plan does not depend on a perfect birth certificate; a range is enough. ἐνομίζετο (enomizeto) means “was supposed”, it conveys what people generally thought. The word carries the sense of custom or common opinion. Everyone assumed Jesus was Joseph’s biological son. Luke gently corrects that assumption without making a scene. The truth of who Jesus is runs deeper than what the neighbors believed.

Christians across traditions have read this verse in different ways. Many note that thirty was the age Levites began their temple service (Numbers 4:3). Some, like Adam Clarke and John Wesley, see Jesus deliberately aligning with that pattern. Others, like Albert Barnes, caution that Jesus was not a Levite and the connection may not be intended. The parenthetical phrase “as was supposed” is read by most as Luke’s quiet reminder that Joseph was not Jesus’ biological father. On the genealogy that follows, there is a long-standing debate: some hold that Luke traces Mary’s line (making Heli her father), while others think both genealogies trace Joseph’s line through different branches. Both readings affirm Jesus’ genuine descent from David and his connection to the whole human family.

A common misreading takes “began to be about thirty years of age” as though Jesus was just turning thirty. In fact, the Greek construction means “when he began, he was about thirty.” Luke is giving Jesus’ approximate age at the start of his ministry, not describing a birthday.
