Genesis 10:21 Meaning: Why Shem Is Called Father of Eber's Children

Father (av, H1). The word means more than a biological parent. It can mean founder, ancestor, or head of a clan. Shem is called father of Eber’s children even though Eber is his great-grandson. The title says: through Shem the blessings of God will flow to a whole family line.

Eber (ever, H5677). The name likely means ‘region beyond’ or ‘the other side.’ It is the root of the word ‘Hebrew.’ Some commentators, like Adam Clarke, connect it to Abraham crossing the Euphrates. The name itself hints at a people who are pilgrims, people who come from beyond.

Adam Clarke offered a different view: the word ‘Hebrew’ may come from Abraham ‘passing over’ the river, not from a person. Other readers simply take it as a genealogical note. Across traditions, there is agreement that this verse points to the line of promise, the family God would use to bless all nations.

Some readers assume that ‘the father of all the children of Eber’ means Shem was the biological father of every person called a Hebrew. In fact, Eber is Shem’s great-grandson (verse 24). The phrase means Shem is the ancestor through whom the Hebrew people trace their line. It is a title of honor, not a literal statement of immediate parenthood.
