Ephesians 4:3 Meaning: Keeping the Unity the Spirit Gives

The Greek word translated eager or giving diligence is spoudazontes. It carries the idea of making haste, exerting yourself, putting real energy into something. This is not a passive hoping for unity, it requires effort. The second key word is tērein, meaning to keep or to guard. The same word is used of guarding a treasure or protecting a city. Unity is something we already have, not something we manufacture, but it is fragile and needs our care. Finally, sundesmos means bond, like the ligaments that hold a body together. Peace is what binds us, and it is a gift from Christ Himself, who is our peace.

Adam Clarke, a Methodist commentator, said this unity is “a unity of sentiments, desires, and affections, such as is worthy of and springs from the Spirit of God.” John Calvin, from the Reformed tradition, thought the words point to “harmony of views” and stressed that peace keeps that harmony permanent. The Cambridge Bible, representing an Anglican perspective, notes that Christ is our peace, and realizing our connection to Him is the way to maintain unity. Across traditions, there is agreement: the Spirit gives the unity; we are called to guard it through the bond of peace.

Some think this verse means Christians must create unity among themselves by ignoring differences or agreeing on everything. In fact, Paul says the unity already exists, it is the Spirit’s work. Our job is to keep it, like a gardener protects a garden that someone else planted. The bond that holds us together is peace, not forced agreement on every detail.

This week, instead of waiting for the other person to make the first move, ask God to show you one small way you can be a peacemaker. It might be a kind word, a patient silence, or letting go of a complaint. That is what it means to be eager to keep the unity the Spirit has given.
