2 Corinthians 8:16 Meaning: Why Paul Thanks God for Titus’s Care

Two words in this verse carry the weight of Paul’s gratitude.

The first is spoudē, translated “earnest care.” It means haste, diligence, a focused effort that comes from the heart. This is not a casual interest. It is the kind of care that drives someone to act, to travel, to follow through. Paul sees that same intensity in Titus that he himself feels for the Corinthians.

The second word is the verb behind “puts.” In Greek it is didōmi, to give, to bestow. Paul does not say that Titus decided on his own to care. He says God gave that care into Titus’s heart. The word for “heart” here, kardia, pictures the whole inner person, thoughts, feelings, will. So God is not merely inspiring a good mood. He is planting a deep, active concern at the core of who Titus is.

Paul thanks God because he knows that every right affection, every ounce of genuine care for others, starts with the Giver. That is worth pausing to thank Him for.

Matthew Henry highlighted Paul’s wisdom in commending Titus’s earnest care, showing how pastoral service is both a human effort and a divine gift. Across traditions, Christians have read this verse as a reminder that God is the source of every genuine desire to serve others, and that we owe Him thanks for raising up people who care for us.

Some read this verse as Paul simply thanking God that Titus was willing to help. The mistake is to see Titus’s care as his own natural kindness that God then used. In fact, Paul thanks God for putting that earnest care into Titus’s heart. The care itself is a gift. Paul is not just grateful for the outcome; he is grateful for the origin. God made this happen in Titus, and that is why Paul gives thanks.

This week, someone will show genuine care for you, a friend checks in, a spouse listens, a coworker helps without being asked. It is easy to thank only the person. Take it one step further: quietly thank the God who put that care in their heart. And when you feel a nudge to reach out to someone, do not dismiss it as just your own idea. Recognize it as a gift from Him, and follow through. That kind of love, from start to finish, is His work.
