Meaning in one sentence
Why did Zechariah crown the high priest? This oracle unveils the Branch, a king-priest who builds God’s temple and brings perfect peace.
Context
This passage comes after Zechariah's night visions, as a real-life acted prophecy. The prophet is told to take silver and gold from recent exiles who had arrived from Babylon, to make crowns, and to place them on the head of Joshua the high priest. This was a shocking act, priests were not crowned. But Joshua was acting out a future reality: the coming of the Branch, a figure who would be both king and priest, building God's temple and ruling from his throne. The crowns would be kept in the temple as a memorial, and the promise extends to people 'far off' who would join the building.
Key Words
The word Branch (tsemach) is a shoot that sprouts up from dry ground. The same verb is used twice in verse 12: 'He will sprout up from his place.' This is not a leader we install; God grows him quietly, from a place no one expects. Then we hear of a priest on his throne. The Hebrew literally places the word for priest (kohen) right beside the word for throne (kisse). The two offices that never touched each other in Israel are brought together in one person. And finally, the counsel of peace (atsat shalom) is more than an absence of war, it is the deliberate, wisdom-filled plan that holds together what seems impossible. The King-Priest does not bring tension; he brings wholeness.
How Christians Read This Verse
Christians across traditions have seen this passage as pointing to Jesus Christ. Reformed and evangelical commentators (Matthew Henry, Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) identify the Branch as the Messiah who unites the offices of priest and king in his single person, a role no earthly leader could fill. The Cambridge Bible (Anglican) emphasizes the building of the temple as both the literal rebuilding in Zechariah's day and the spiritual temple of believers. Catholic interpreters often connect this to Christ as the true High Priest and King, with the counsel of peace spoken of as the harmony of justice and mercy in him. Orthodox tradition reads this as part of the messianic prophecy fulfilled in Christ's incarnation and eternal priesthood. No tradition claims Joshua himself was the Messiah; all agree he was a signpost.
A common misunderstanding
Living This Out
This week, you might feel separated roles in your own life, your work feels secular, your faith feels private. The passage invites you to see that in Christ, the division is gone. He builds his temple (his people) not by forcing them but by growing them from within. And he sits on a throne of peace. What would change if you trusted that your everyday tasks are part of his temple-building? Take a moment to name one area where you feel the tension between sacred and ordinary, and hand it to the King-Priest who holds both.
Main takeaway: Jesus Christ is the promised Branch who alone unites the crown of King and the robes of Priest, building God's house in perfect peace.
For Families
For ages 5, 8
God told someone to put a crown on a priest! That was a special sign. It pointed to Jesus, who is both our King and our Priest. He builds a home for us with God.
For ages 9, 12
In this passage, Zechariah does a strange thing: he crowns the high priest Joshua. That mixed two roles, priests didn't wear crowns, and kings weren't priests. But God was showing that one day Jesus would be both. He is the Branch (like a new shoot from an old stump) who builds God's family and rules with peace. No one else can do both, but Jesus does. That means we can trust him completely, he has authority to lead and compassion to forgive. The invitation is to let him build his temple in your life, starting today.
Questions People Ask
Why did Zechariah crown a priest?
Priests weren't supposed to be crowned; only kings wore crowns. But God used a symbolic act to show that the coming Messiah would combine both offices. Joshua the high priest acted as a living picture of the Branch, a king-priest to come.
Who is 'the Branch' in Zechariah 6?
The Branch (Hebrew tsemach) is a messianic title found also in Zechariah 3:8 and Isaiah 11:1. It pictures a new shoot growing from the stump of David's family, a humble beginning that grows into a glorious king-priest. Christians identify this as Jesus Christ.
What does 'priest on his throne' mean?
This is unique in Scripture. Normally kings sat on thrones and priests served in the temple. To have a priest sitting on a throne meant that one person would hold both roles. It points to a new kind of leadership that combines authority with sacrifice.
What is the 'counsel of peace' between them both?
The phrase probably refers to harmony between the two roles of king and priest, or between the Messiah and God. It means that his rule is not harsh but brings wholeness. Some see it as the peace that comes through Christ's intercession and reign.
Who are 'those far off' who will come to build the temple?
Initially, the Jews who had returned from Babylon brought offerings. But the language broadens to include Gentiles, people from distant nations who would join God's people. In the New Testament, Paul uses similar language (Ephesians 2:13) for all who are brought near by Christ's blood.
