Numbers 27:1-11 Meaning: Five Sisters Changed Israel's Inheritance Law
1Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph came near. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
2They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the Tent of Meeting, saying,
3“Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against Yahweh in the company of Korah, but he died in his own sin. He had no sons.
4Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father.”
5Moses brought their cause before Yahweh.
6Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
7“The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers. You shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.
8You shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter.
9If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.
10If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
11If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman who is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it. This shall be a statute and ordinance for the children of Israel, as Yahweh commanded Moses.’”

Meaning in one sentence
When five sisters asked for their father's inheritance, God said they were right and a new law was born. Discover how their bold faith changed everything.
Context
The Israelites stood at the edge of the Promised Land. A fresh census had just been taken, and plans were being laid to divide the inheritance among the tribes. But for five sisters from the tribe of Manasseh, a painful question hung in the air. Their father Zelophehad had died in the wilderness, leaving no sons. Under the existing practice, his name and his portion of the land would simply vanish. So Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah did something extraordinary. They walked to the door of the Tent of Meeting and presented their case before Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the whole assembly. They did not demand; they asked. Moses, unsure how to rule, did what he always did: he brought the matter before Yahweh. And God answered with a word that changed everything. The daughters were right. And from their one request came a new law for all Israel.
Key Words
Three Hebrew words anchor this passage. First, the verb “drew near” (qarav) carries a sense of purposeful approach. These women did not hang back at the edge of the camp. They stepped forward into the presence of the leaders and the Lord. It took courage to cross that threshold. Second, the word “right” (ken) in God’s reply. The Lord does not merely grant their request; He says they speak what is true and just. It is a wholehearted endorsement, not a reluctant concession. Third is “inheritance” (nachalah). In Israel this was never just real estate. It was a share in God’s promise to Abraham, a place in the covenant community, a name that would last. The daughters wanted more than land. They wanted their father’s place in God’s story. God saw that desire and honored it.
How Christians Read This Verse
Christians across traditions have read this passage with wonder. Many see it as a landmark for justice. John Calvin noted that the question was difficult until God Himself removed all doubt. Adam Clarke pointed out a strange shift in the Hebrew grammar, where the masculine pronoun suddenly stands in for the feminine, and wondered if it hinted at something deeper about God’s inclusion. Matthew Henry emphasized the daughters’ respect: they did not demand but made a reasoned appeal. Others, like Keil and Delitzsch, focus on the preservation of family lineage and the way God’s law adapts to protect the vulnerable. Every tradition agrees: this was not a human invention. It was a divine response to a faithful request, and it became a permanent statute in Israel.
A common misunderstanding
Some readers think the daughters of Zelophehad were claiming a right that already existed, that they were simply enforcing a law on the books. In fact, there was no such law. Women had no right of inheritance in Israel up to that point. The sisters were raising a new question: “Why should our father’s name disappear?” And they trusted God to answer. The law came after their request, not before.
Living This Out
You may feel overlooked by the system. Maybe your situation doesn’t fit any neat category, and you wonder if anyone sees. The five sisters show us what to do: bring your concern to God and to the community He has placed around you. They did not stay silent. They did not demand. They presented their case with clarity and faith. Then they waited for God to move. This week, when you feel tempted to assume nothing can change, remember that God hears the questions no one has asked before. He does not dismiss honest pleas. He often uses them to open a path for others.
Main takeaway: God not only hears the voiceless; He establishes new ways to include them in His promises.
For Families
For ages 5, 8
Five sisters asked for their father’s land because he didn’t have sons. God told Moses to give it to them. God always listens when we ask for what is right.
For ages 9, 12
The daughters of Zelophehad noticed something unfair. Their father died without sons, so under the rules, his family would lose its place in the Promised Land. They didn’t stay quiet. They went to Moses, the priest, and all the leaders to ask for help. Moses took their question to God. God said they were right, and He gave a new law so that daughters could inherit when there were no sons. Their courage changed Israel forever.
Questions People Ask
Why did the daughters of Zelophehad need an inheritance?
In ancient Israel, property passed through sons to keep the land within the tribe. Zelophehad had five daughters but no sons. Without a change, his family would lose its share in the Promised Land, and his name would disappear. The daughters asked for a portion so their father's legacy would continue.
What does 'died in his own sin' mean in verse 3?
The daughters wanted to clarify that their father did not die as a rebel like Korah and his followers. He died the ordinary death that came to all the wilderness generation because they did not trust God fully. That distinction showed that his family was not being punished beyond the general judgment.
Did this inheritance law apply only to Zelophehad's daughters?
No. God told Moses to make it a permanent statute for all Israel. Whenever a man died without a son, his inheritance would pass to his daughter. If no daughter, then to brothers, and so on down the family line. It became part of the legal code.
How does this story relate to the rest of the Bible?
The daughters reappear in Joshua 17 when the land is actually divided. Later, in Numbers 36, a further rule was added to keep inherited land within the tribe. The New Testament does not refer to this story directly, but Galatians 3:28 reflects the principle that all believers are heirs of God's promise.
What can we learn from these five sisters?
They saw a need and trusted God with it. They approached the leaders respectfully, explained their case clearly, and let God answer. They didn't push or demand; they asked. When we face something that seems unfair, we can bring it to God and to the right people, and trust Him to work.
