1 Chronicles 28:1-10 Meaning: A King Transfers a Dream
1David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, the captains of the companies who served the king by division, the captains of thousands, the captains of hundreds, and the rulers over all the substance and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officers and the mighty men, even all the mighty men of valor, to Jerusalem.
2Then David the king stood up on his feet and said, “Hear me, my brothers and my people! As for me, it was in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, and for the footstool of our God; and I had prepared for the building.
3But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood.’
4However Yahweh, the God of Israel, chose me out of all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever. For he has chosen Judah to be prince; and in the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel.
5Of all my sons (for Yahweh has given me many sons), he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of Yahweh’s kingdom over Israel.
6He said to me, ‘Solomon, your son, shall build my house and my courts; for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
7I will establish his kingdom forever if he continues to do my commandments and my ordinances, as it is today.’
8Now therefore, in the sight of all Israel, Yahweh’s assembly, and in the audience of our God, observe and seek out all the commandments of Yahweh your God, that you may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children after you forever.
9You, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for Yahweh searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.
10Take heed now, for Yahweh has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary. Be strong, and do it.”
1And David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the captains over the thousands, and captains over the hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possession of the king, and of his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the valiant men, unto Jerusalem.
2Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: As for me, I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building:
3But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood.
4Howbeit the Lord God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:
5And of all my sons, (for the Lord hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.
6And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
7Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day.
8Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the Lord, and in the audience of our God, keep and seek for all the commandments of the Lord your God: that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever.
9And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
10Take heed now; for the Lord hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it.

5and out of all my sons--for many sons hath Jehovah given to me--He also fixeth on Solomon my son, to sit on the throne of the kingdom of Jehovah over Israel,

Meaning in one sentence
David gathers every leader in Israel to publicly hand the temple project to Solomon.
Context
These are David’s final public words. The old king, confined to his bed, rises before the entire leadership of Israel, tribal princes, military commanders, stewards of the king’s property, and all the mighty men. This is no private farewell. David wants every witness to hear how God chose him from his father’s house, chose Judah, and then chose Solomon. He also wants them to hear the condition: the kingdom will stand if Solomon and the people obey God’s commandments. The Chronicler records the transfer of a dream, David’s dream to build a temple, to his son, and the transfer of responsibility to the whole nation.
Key Words
Three Hebrew words give the passage its weight. First, chosen (בָּחַר, bachar). The verb appears four times in these verses: God chose Judah, chose David, chose Solomon. It is not about human merit but divine delight. David uses it without pride; he is simply passing on what God decided.
Second, know (יָדַע, yada). “Know the God of your father” means far more than information. It is the word used for the deepest intimacy, Adam knew Eve. David is telling Solomon to enter a personal, living relationship with God, not just to serve Him from duty.
Third, the pair “perfect heart” (לֵב שָׁלֵם, lev shalem) and “willing mind” (נֶפֶשׁ חֲפֵצָה, nephesh chafetzah). A perfect heart is not sinless but whole, undivided. A willing mind is a soul that delights in serving. Together they describe the inner condition God searches for, not flawless performance, but complete devotion. When you seek Him with that kind of heart, He promises to let Himself be found.
How Christians Read This Verse
Christians across traditions have read this passage as a powerful call to wholehearted devotion. Protestant commentators like Matthew Henry emphasize the conditional nature of God’s promise, “if he be constant”, and see it as a pattern for every believer: grace does not cancel responsibility. Catholic readers often find in Solomon a type of Christ, the true builder of God’s dwelling place, and in the temple a foreshadowing of the Church. Jewish tradition emphasizes the covenantal assembly as the foundation of national identity. What all Christians share is the conviction that knowing God personally and serving Him with undivided hearts is the heart of the matter, whether the building is made of stone or of lives.
A common misunderstanding
A common misreading is to think God rejected David as a builder because David’s wars made him morally unfit. In fact, the text presents it as a matter of timing and purpose. The temple was to be a “house of rest,” and the Chronicler associates rest with Solomon. David established the kingdom through warfare; Solomon would enjoy the peace to build. God’s “no” was not a punishment but a redirection, a pattern the passage invites you to trust in your own life.
Living This Out
David’s example asks you to consider the dreams God has given you that you may not see fulfilled. Can you hand them over without bitterness, trusting that the One who gave the dream has good reasons for passing it to another? This week, take one area where you feel closure or frustration, a project, a role, a hope, and speak aloud to God: “You are in charge. I will serve You with whatever comes next.” Then, like Solomon, set aside time each day simply to know God, not just to work for Him.
Main takeaway: Serve God with a whole heart and a willing mind, for He searches every heart and longs to be found by you.
For Families
For ages 5, 8
David wanted to build a house for God, but God said, “Let your son Solomon do it.” David gave Solomon his plans and told him, “Be strong and do the work.” When you can’t do something you wanted, you can still help someone else do it.
For ages 9, 12
David had a big dream to build the temple, but God said no and chose Solomon instead. David didn’t get angry or quit. He gathered everyone together and gave Solomon his full support. The most important thing David told Solomon was to know God and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind. That’s what really matters, whether you build a temple or do your homework.
Questions People Ask
Why couldn't David build the temple if he was a man after God's own heart?
God told David, 'You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood.' The temple was to be a house of rest and peace. David's role was to establish the kingdom through warfare. God chose Solomon, whose name is related to peace, to build the temple. This was not a punishment but a fitting assignment.
What does it mean to 'know the God of your father'?
To know God in this context means far more than having information about Him. The Hebrew word yada is used for intimate relationship, even between a husband and wife. David calls Solomon to a personal, living knowledge of God, trust, love, and obedience based on firsthand experience.
What is a 'perfect heart' and 'willing mind'?
The Hebrew phrase for perfect heart is lev shalem, meaning whole, complete, undivided. It is not sinless perfection but wholehearted devotion. A willing mind (nephesh chafetzah) is a soul that delights in serving God. Together they describe the inner posture God searches for, not flawless performance, but sincere and joyful commitment.
Is God's promise to Solomon conditional?
Yes, the promise in verse 7 is conditional: 'I will establish his kingdom forever if he continues to do my commandments.' Many Protestant commentators emphasize the 'if' as a sign that the Davidic covenant requires faithfulness. God's grace is real, but it leads to a life of obedience. The promise ultimately finds its fulfillment in Christ, who was perfectly faithful.
Why does the Chronicler list so many kinds of leaders?
The detailed list shows that this event was a formal, national assembly. Every level of leadership was represented: tribal princes, military captains, officials over property, and mighty men. The Chronicler emphasizes that the transfer of authority from David to Solomon was public and witnessed by the whole nation. It underscores the corporate responsibility of Israel to obey God's commandments.
