קָרַן (qa.ran)

The Hebrew verb qaran means to shine or emit rays of light. In its basic Qal form, it describes the act of sending out beams, capturing a visual intensity that goes beyond simple illumination. This meaning appears in contexts where light is actively projected outward, creating a striking contrast with darkness.

A more distinctive usage emerges in the Hiphil stem, where qaran shifts from shining to growing horns. Because the Hebrew word for horn, qeren, shares the same root, this verbal form literally means "to be horned" or "to display horns." This semantic link is most famous in Exodus 34:29-35, where Moses’ face shines (or radiates) after speaking with God. The ancient Greek translators of the Septuagint rendered this as "horned," a choice that later influenced artistic depictions of Moses with literal horns rather than rays of light.

The connection between shining and horns likely stems from the image of a bull’s horns catching the sunlight, or perhaps the idea of radiating power. This single word bridges two powerful images: the dazzling brilliance of divine presence and the formidable strength associated with horns in the ancient Near East.
