The Hebrew word etzel denotes physical proximity, meaning "beside," "near," or "by." Derived from a root sense of joining or attaching, it describes a state of being contiguous to something else. In the Old Testament, it appears in forty-one verses, frequently marking the immediate location of people or objects relative to one another.

While often translated simply as "by" or "near," etzel carries a specific nuance of adjacency that implies closeness without necessarily merging identities. It is used to describe spatial relationships, such as Joseph’s brothers standing by him (Genesis 42:9) or the location of cities near Jerusalem (1 Kings 3:20). The term can also function with verbs of motion, indicating movement toward a specific side or neighbor.

A notable usage occurs in Proverbs 8:30, where Wisdom is described as being "by him" as a master workman during creation. This personification highlights an intimate, close association rather than mere distance. Translators typically render etzel with simple prepositions of place, preserving the straightforward geographical or relational closeness intended by the original text.
